Ghetto Ebraico

The Jewish ghetto of Venice is located in the Cannaregio district and its name probably derives from the presence, in this area, of some foundries destined to throw (melt) metals.
In 1516 the Jews of Venice were confined to this area by the Council of Ten, a demarcated area in which the Jews were forced to live and could not leave from dusk to dawn. From the beginning this was a protection for the Jews, but gradually became a prison. The maximum population of the Ghetto was around 5000 people. number that due to the Second World War was reduced to about 1000 people.
